Towards a Successful Nexus Project: Findings Presented and Call for Dissemination at NexusNet Meeting

On March 7th, during the NexusNet Working Group 2 meeting, Mirela Sertić Perić and Vesna Gulin presented the results of “Towards an Impactful Nexus project”. The project is a joint initiative of EJWP3 and EJWP4 executed in the period October – January 2022-2023 for the University of Thessaly and NexusNet. Mirela commenced the presentation by outlining the rationale and goals of the project, followed by an overview of the EJWP analysis of the NexusNet workshop activities conducted at the NexusNet annual meeting (Athens, September 2022).

Some noteworthy highlights from her presentation are as follows:

Following Mirela’s presentation, Vesna took the floor to share the findings from the interviews EJWP participants conducted with the NexusNet members with an aim to collect their opinion on what makes a Nexus project impactful. During the interviews, participants emphasized that an impactful NEXUS project should have a positive impact on society, influence policies, and inspire future generations. Highlights from Vesna’s presentation can be seen in the image:

“This project is a fine opportunity to look across borders to see how the concerns and strengths of the NEXUSNET project can be addressed most effectively. We have a great group working on this, including project leadership from EJWP participants and Professor Chrysi Laspidou at the University of Thessaly, who is a key leader in the NEXUSNET project itself, founder of the nexus network and an EJWP Ambassador,” said EJWP Director Naomi Timmer.

Background: Urbanization, population growth, climate change, and other anthropogenic stresses create a need for a more integrated approach in the use of resources. The Water-Energy-Food Nexus is a holistic approach for resources management that takes into account the interlinkages between water, energy and food systems, toward a more sustainable system. NEXUSNET is a COST Action that aims at creating a network of researchers, policy makers, and practitioners to carry the nexus thinking forward.
