Ap Verheggen stARTtocare

Creating new frames, new thoughts….thinking differently
Inspiration with a drink.

‘Dare to dream about making the impossible possible.’ Ap Verheggen is an extraordinarily creative artist in a myriad of media. He makes sculptures, designs objects, writes and produces documentary films. His projects Cool(E)motion and SunGlacier added value in the discussion about climate change. Instead of ‘naming, blaming and shaming’, App wants to add a positive focus. ‘Our climate is changing very rapidly, so extra fast response is required.’ Ap is connected with the young professionals in the water sector through Wetskills and Nationaal Watertraineeship, because it stimulates young people to think out of the box. These people dare to dream and to innovate. They combine creativity and expertise to come to projects in a similar way as I do. SunGlacier: In this project me and my team push the boundaries of what is technically and scientifically feasible. Is it strange to believe that we could create a glacier in the desert? I am fascinated by the prospect of building a large sculpture in the hot desert that can produce icicles on its own. www.sunglacier.nl. Ap Verheggen and his team proved that this technology can be produced very cheap: available for everyone.

In the time of COVID-19 he is one of the founders of stART to care. stART to care is a new project to link artists with new heroes that are putting their own well-being second in order to care of all of us during the Covid-19 crisis. This is for the hospital intensive care (ICU) staff and ambulance paramedics, the community volunteers, the sanitation workers, and all who continue giving their very best so that our own lives can carry on. Through stART to care, artists working in all mediums can send a “thank you” with a creative gesture (painting, sculpture, music etc.) to encourage their heroes and demonstrate a solidarity in hopes of making their day a bit brighter.

Why now for stART to care? It’s time to give back and send a message of support to our heroes. In this way the artists show a greater concern for humanity. Even when most cultural events are put on hold, the creative spirit continues with a purpose during social distancing and quarantines.

How can you be a part of this? Send your artistic idea or the name and location of your hero via direct message. You can also submit the name of a health care or public service worker who is giving their all – explaining why you want to recognize this person. We will ensure that your project will be seen by the heroes and the artists.

The sculpture ‘Raging Bull’ by artist Ap Verheggen will be presented to a caregiver in a hospital ICU [ML1] to kick off this motivational initiative. The renowned singer-songwriter Janieck has written a song for stART to care in hopes of reaching and inspiring more people.
